The Mines of Paris

The Catacombs, Paris
The Catacombs, Paris

The mines of Paris are often confused with Catacombs of Paris. But in fact they are different places and have no connection to each other. The mines were used to dig out minerals from Paris’ diverse deposit, but afterwards they were closed and the tunnels are all that remained. Nowadays exploring the mines is illegal and leads to big fines for those who break the law. The mines aren’t patrolled; there is no security in there that makes them dangerous. The legend says that there is a monster, which has a form of spirit that is protecting mines from the unwilling guests. But the reality is even more thrilling. The tunnels often are really close to the Parisian underground. You won’t find most of them on the city maps, though they exist and they hide lots of danger because of dark deep holes that are almost impossible to be noticed. The endless underground plays its tricks with the sound, making it lover, almost muting it, making sure no one will hear you scream and call for help. But it is probably a good thing, because you never know what can hear you and notice your presence. There are thousands of human bones that flood the tunnels. Nobody can tell you for sure how long have they been there. They can be considered as some kind of warning… or maybe the “Help me” sign? One thing we know for sure – you definitely should not go to the mines if you have claustrophobia. Though there is no guarantee, you won’t get it while exploring the mines. If you still want to go there – you will need water, the flashlight and a friend… Better not just one.

People ended up there for different reasons – ones had a frivolously mental disorder others were kept there due to the court’s decision as mentally ill criminals, dangerous for society. The treatment in the hospital could be barely called humane, that’s why the intuition was closed in 1990. For sixteen years the demolished building remained at its place. It brought there Satanists, arsonist and just curious travelers and locals. The only reason to keep the building standing was the fear the asbestos could spread, but destructing the building was the only way to stop people from coming in there. The terror here comes not because this place is haunted, but because of what happened at this hospital all the time it worked. Lots of horrible stuff was happening there: patients slept in the hallways, where were no cleaning-up done ever. The personnel harassed the ones they supposed to treat and guard. One patient had his teeth ripped out without any anesthesia.  Once, one of the patients, the girl, was killed violently by another patient, Charles Gable. Her body was found outside the property border. Nobody saw Charles since then. But they discovered another patient playing with victim’s teeth though.
